The Hood!

"Tales from 14th Street" Is a look back at childhood days living in San Pedro California. I will share the fun and not so fun adventures of living in the hood during the 80's and early 90's. If anybody grew up in this area during that time please email or comment anytime and share your stories or thoughts.

Funny picture I found of the street mocosos of my bothers generation. He is the one with the three jersey in the front, it looks like he is about six years old here. He is 33 now so this must of been early to mid 80's.

The kid with the red T-Shirt in the back was Oscar Barrientos he is dead now. He got shot when we still lived in the area. I was about ten years old at the time. He had later on joined a gang and had gone to jail for a bit. He was out no longer then a couple of weeks when rival gang members shot him in the middle of the night while he slept. I guess they somehow knew he slept on the living room couch and crept right to the window and pulled the trigger. The shot him directly in the head. I can still remember clearly the shock the neighborhood was in the next morining, you could hear his mother scream from down the block. He was 18 years old when he passed still a young kid. That was the early 90's when shit was cracken with gang activity at it's fullest, it seemed to be all that was around us at the time.

One of my aunts still lives in the same vecindad we lived so whenever we go visit her it's like being back in our childhood days. I taken pictures before of the area and will soon be putting them up on upcoming posts.

You gotta love your history this weekend!

I ran into a listing on a dope event this weekend if you are into history. It was funny this came up because I had just finished reading the " Images of America Series" on Wilmington Ca. I got into the book since I am doing some research on Wilmington for future blog posts, I also always lagged on going to visit the Banning House Residence Museum so I had decided to go this weekend.

I went on checking the usual blogs and ran into a post on LA List about " LA Heritage Day" it will take place this Sunday March 22th at the Heritage Square Museum it is an event where all the historical societies and museums get come together to share the history of their communities. I was kind of thinking " I guess this weekend is meant to be about history" which is always cool with me. It is $5 bucks or free if you print out this flyer.

I was surprised not to see the San Pedro historical Society or the Wilmington Historical Society listed, hopefully they will make it. There is no doubt those two towns got history. Hope you all can make it.

Is Wilmington finally changing?

It was a trip when I ran into this recent LA Times article about Wilmington looking into a greener future. I have blogged about Wilmington many times before and how it has been a forgotten town with history. Apparently there are people who are working hard to change that by getting the attention from city hall. There is plans for a park near the port , and a new waterfront project is in the works, much like the waterfront revitalization in San Pedro. A "Green Technology Center" is also proposed and other things of that nature. I mostly displayed post's on here showing the rawness and grittiness of Wilmington. It points out in the story that interesting and familiar views of Wilmington.

"To outsiders who know Wilmington only as a no-man's land of industrial blight and air pollution, that kind of talk might sound preposterous"

They also mention planting more trees even in areas that I did not even like going to like " Ghost Town" which was always known for violence. Last year they raided Ghost Town's East side Pain gang known for their crack trade in the area.

The trippy part was the tea shop that just opened up in the area, now that is really a change. The place is called "Ortiz Hojas Premium Tea House". I would never expect that, all could say is "wow" Wilmington will be looking up. Now am I worried about gentrification? not at this point I see the good things happening for the gente that live in the area, not for other people to push them out. Now will I miss junk yards and abandoned lots? yes I will but I think that there is plenty of that still for a long time. I can't hate on the people trying to make Wilmington better it does deserve some kindness. I think I am going to have to pay a visit to that tea shop and check it out maybe I will do a post about it later.
