Swapmeet News Briefs

Here are some current events complied regarding crime in Los Angeles and Mexico along with my random rainy day photos. Please feel free to comment because feedback is much appreciated here at Swapmeet Chronicles. Now let us do the dam thing!

Rain?
The rain has been hitting Los Angeles, however, that makes up for all the drought we had in the past. So enjoy!

The Grim Sleeper

A few years ago the LA Weekly did a series of news stories focusing on a string of murders (mostly women)  that had occurred over a period of 25 years in South Los Angeles. The women  found murdered where mostly Black, and many whom lived the hard life of prostitution. Many of these cases where never reported in the media. The LAPD received much criticism for not ever making the murders public. For many of these victims the cases became cold. Finally after a re-opening of these cases  DNA evidence linked an alleged killer to 10 victims all murdered between 1985 and 2007.  It was not until 2008 that LA Weekly crime reporter  Christine Pelisek started writing and researching the murders and dubbed the killer " Grim Sleeper" because he had taken a 14- year break between murders.
This story struck me for a couple of reasons. First of all it should the harsh reality of crime that never gets reported especially crime in low-income neighborhoods with the residents being mostly minorities. It almost seemed like most of these women did not matter because of the fact that they were mostly prostitutes and Black. The killer was also very illusive he managed to charm these women and unfortunately they  became vulnerable to him. Here is the original story as read on LA Weekly.

There’s a small room at LAPD headquarters where the public isn’t allowed, where the door is quickly shut to the hall, where arguments erupt and frustrations fester. It’s off-limits to most other detectives, no press allowed. Lest anyone forget, a memo on the wall says so.
The six men inside call themselves the “800 Task Force” even though they no longer occupy Room 800, having moved to a lower floor of Parker Center to make room for a sex-crimes team. Their new room is cramped, the desks piled with mounds of paperwork. What is striking about their space is its main wall, heavily papered with photographs of dead young women.

Most of the bodies were found in the same vicinity around South Los Angeles.

July 2010 an arrest was finally made.
Lonnie David Franklin Jr was arrested at his home in South LA near Western Ave were most of the murdered bodies were found. The alleged killer was discovered through DNA evidence retrieved from his 28-year-old son. His son had recently gotten arrested and his DNA matched. All new inmates are now required to swab for DNA samples. The DNA was familial to that of Franklin's DNA and the victim's.

Courtroom photo of now 58-year-old Franklin

This week in an even more shocking revelation the  LAPD released over 100 photographs and videos of women found in Franklin's home most of the even posing nude. Police hoped that somebody would recognize some of these women which could be potential victims.
Up until now the LAPD has received hundreds of calls from people giving tips on some of women. LAPD identifies 21 of 160 women in Grim Sleeper suspects photos.
For a full list of the 160 check out lapd.org  Warning some of the pictures are creepy because some of the women look like they are dead.

No justice in Mexico!

Marisela Escobedo Ortiz, was killed  in Juarez recently by a masked man in revenge for wanting justice for her daughter. Rubi Frayre Escobedo was found murdered and dismembered in 2008. Her boyfriend Sergio Barraza, was the prime suspect. Barraza was arrested and later released because lack of evidence even though he confessed to the murder and told authorities where the body was to be found. Now how ridicules and corrupt can that be?? It is a shame that the criminal justice system in Mexico has to be so dirty. To add insult to injury the boyfriend joined the "Zetas" cartel right after his release. Talk about harsh. Read the rest of the story here

30,000  have been killed in Mexico since 2008.

Most inmates die on death row of suicide and other natural causes as opposed to being executed.

John Levae Post was found dead in his cell in San Quinton's death row this week. The causes were unknown. It can take years for an inmate to come up for execution and the majority die before their date.   The last inmate to be executed in California's death row was Clarence Ray Allen and before him  was the infamous Crip co-founder Stanley Tookie Williams.

From LA Times...Since capital punishment was reinstated in California, 52 condemned inmates have died from natural causes; 18 have committed suicide; 13 were executed in California; one was executed in Missouri; five have died from other causes; and one cause of death is unknown, corrections officials said.As of Dec. 21, 2010, there were 717 offenders on California’s death row, authorities said.

Westlake District Police Shooting Causes Uproar: Your Feelings on the Situation.

Photo from Los Angeles Times

On Sunday, September 5, 2010 bicycle police shot and killed a Guatemalan day laborer Manuel Jamines who was swinging a knife in the Westlake district on 6th and Union.
People in the the mostly immigrant neighborhood where outraged with police for taking the incident that far. Yesterday in the same area a mini riot broke out with police and people attending a vigil near where he died. Debris was being thrown at police from apartment buildings roofs and people running around the street in protest. Trash cans where also lit on fire. Twenty people where arrested.
The neighborhood has always been a target of controversy with the immigrant community  and police mostly because of years of gang violence and problems with the Rampart Division who patrol the area.
According to the Los Angeles times today there will be a community meeting that will be held near MacArthur park so officials could respond to this situation. Protesters and activist are said to continue expressing their anger towards the situation until something is done about it.

The question is did police use too much force on this situation?

The man who they shot was said to be a Guatemalan day laborer. He was known on the street as possibly being homeless with a drinking problem. Some have said he was known to always be drunk and had pulled out a knife before. According to the article he was actually scaring some people that is why they waved down police. He then refused to let go of the knife and was drunk ranting. Here is the article from Los Angeles Times.

Police shoot man dead in Westlake

LAPD officers had ordered him to drop a knife before they opened fire.

CALIFORNIA

September 06, 2010|Victoria Kim
Los Angeles police shot and killed a man who reportedly threatened bystanders with a knife in a bustling Westlake shopping district on Sunday, authorities said.
Officers with the bicycle unit of LAPD's Rampart Division were responding to an unrelated call about 1 p.m. when a pedestrian flagged them down and alerted them to a man with a knife near 6th Street and Union Avenue, according to Cmdr. Blake Chou. The officers confronted the man and ordered him to drop the knife several times. When he failed to drop the weapon, officers began firing, police said.

  • Police did not release the dead man's name or age, nor did they specify how many shots had been fired. The LAPD's force investigation division was called to the scene, Chou said.
The shooting occurred on a busy stretch of 6th street that is lined with discount shops, thrift stores, and a Food 4 Less grocery store. The street, which sees heavy foot traffic from shoppers, came to a standstill.
Crowds gathered along the crime scene tape that stretched for several blocks as officers remained at the scene. The crowds grew larger and increasingly surly as time passed. All eyes were focused on the body, which was covered with a white sheet and remained in plain sight on a corner in front of a dollar store, beside a newspaper sales box. Blood ran down the sidewalk.
Some nearby residents said officers routinely harassed them there and took the opportunity Sunday to voice their opinions about the police.
"Killers go to hell," one person said.
"You guys don't have the right to come to our neighborhood and assassinate people," another yelled.
A resident living less than a block from the scene said the dead man was middle-aged, well-known in the area and frequently appeared to be drunk. She often saw him passed out not far from where he was shot.
"He's the guy that always sleeps under that tree right there," said Tasha Woods, who was standing out on her front steps watching the police investigation of the scene.
"The guy with the mustache?" a neighbor asked.
"Yeah," Woods responded.
Woods said she heard the commotion from her home and came out to the balcony where she saw the confrontation.
"The police told him, 'Put the knife down, put the knife down,' " Woods said. She said the man responded by becoming agitated and rambling loudly. "You could see him wobbling from side to side," she said.
Meleika Williams, another resident, said the man may have stabbed people on the streets before he was shot by police. Authorities said they could not confirm whether anyone had been stabbed.

On one hand the man was not in the best situation nor the right state of mind. Police could have used another tactic to take him down (ex) pepper spray or bean bag shots.
The three officers involved only one has been on the force thirteen years and the other two 5 years essentially still rookies. But is that a reason they might of shot him because of experienced  in this situation? Or where they really scared for their lives? Did they really think that there was no other way to subdue him?  What is your feelings on this situation? let me know.

Meeting regarding this situation will be held today @

  • Also last week this 28-year-old women stabbed her husband at the " Right Step Hotel on Watson street. The man ended up dying from his wounds. Now this hotel is no joke, I had a boyfriend when I was a teen who lived on Watson street, so I always passed by the motel. It is basically a crack head type of place. There is even a sign on the side of the hotel that says " Drug Free Zone" haha yeah right what a joke and unfortunately incidents like this is not a surprise in that vicinity.

Man Fatally Shot In a Wilmington Bar

We had just gone to this bar (Foc'sle)  not long ago to check out a really old mural that was painted in the bar from the 1950s by Artist Frank Bowers. This bar is mostly locals only so it sounds like an unfortunate incident. Here is the history of this bar from LA Time Machines.
